Meet your instructor Sharon Mooney

Raised among the farmlands of Central Texas, Sharon has always cultivated a love of music. She began taking piano lessons when she was 12 years old with a teacher who has since moved to Hong Kong and become an internationally renowned teacher. Through this first experience of piano, Sharon was able to learn how to effectively sight-read, play hymns, and had a good solid beginning on theory and musicality. These skills would take her to the next level as she began to study in depth with another piano teacher in Waco, TX.

When she was a senior in High School, she won the solo division for Central Texas, earning her a spot to compete in the Texas Music Teachers Association state competition in San Antonio, TX. She also earned multiple Whitlock Theory awards throughout her High School music career, as well as participated in the multi-piano ensemble that performed every year at the state convention.

Sharon went on to study music on a full scholarship at Baylor University in Waco. While there, she took private lessons from Jane Abbott-Kirk, including lessons on the Taubman technique, and studied pedagogy from Lesley Sisterhen McAllister. While at Baylor, she was one of the first pedagogy students to become fully certified in MusikGarten, a development music class, and she specialized in teaching classes of 6 or more infants and their parents.

Post-college, Sharon continued her teaching career, teaching at the Waco Piano Education Center, both group and private lessons. Sharon met and married her husband John, an Air Force Chaplain and they moved to Sioux Falls, SD in the Fall of 2011, where Sharon continued to maintain a small studio.

Sharon is very excited to be back in Texas and continuing to pass on her love of music at South East Texas School of Music.
